I know that everyone who wanted it already has a Google GMail account. Even still, I've got plenty of invites for anyone that has recently emerged from a cave (or what-have-you).
If you want one, just reply with your existing email address. Current Mood: last call

 | 12:37 pm - In which Mattie posts some virus alerts
It seems there's a new MyDoom worm variant floating around. It spreads via email and sounds particularly yucky. Some of the emails are reported to look like this:
Congratulations! PayPal has successfully charged $175 to your credit card. Your order tracking number is A866DEC0, and your item will be shipped within three business days.

In honor of the fact that Ambrose Bierce's birthday was today (back in 1842), I'm running a little contest.
If you're not familiar with Bierce, he's a 19th century author. One work that he's particularly well-known for is The Devil's Dictionary. This was a newspaper serialization of many satirical definitions that, at times, pushed the envelope regarding what was socially acceptable for print. It was quite cynical and usually quite humorous.
There are plenty of good examples:- CAT, n.
A soft, indestructible automaton provided by nature to be kicked when things go wrong in the domestic circle. - CONSERVATIVE, n.
A statesman who is enamored of existing evils, as distinguished from the Liberal, who wishes to replace them with others. - DIPLOMACY, n.
The patriotic art of lying for one's country. ( Read more... ) Your task, if you choose to accept it, is to devilishly define ( five modern terms. )
Later this week, I will pick my favorite definition for each one and announce the winners. Good luck.

 | 02:19 pm - CartoonContest 2003.04.25
Today I'm starting up a little game invented by jorend. Normally we play this with a whiteboard, but I'm going to try it with livejournal.
CartoonContest Your job is to come up with the funniest dialog for a cartoon I've drawn. The cartoons are quickly produced, but hopefully are useful enough to give you ideas. All speech and/or thought bubbles are provided-- your proposal must be something that would read well if situated within these existing bubbles. Submissions that make light of my artistic talent are eligible (but remember that I'm the judge).
For each cartoon, the single funniest submission receives2 points and 1 point is awarded if I feel an honorable mention is in order. You can provide up to 3 submissions, but I will ignore any submitted after 48 hours has elapsed.
I will post 10 cartoons total. The person at the end who has the most points receives a year subscription to LJ (or an equal U.S. dollar value worth of carrots).
Without further ado...

Btw, dawnstardust mentioned handy color-identification software, and I recommend it for anyone with trouble seeing/differentiating colors.
